JONITA GANDHI SINGS ON THE TUNES OF A.R.RAHMAN IN THE UPCOMING BOLLYWOOD FILM ‘HIGHWAY’

unnamed Debutante Singer Jonita Gandhi, 24, makes a striking arrival in the music industry in Bollywood with two tracks sung by her in the upcoming Hindi film, Imtiaz Ali’s Highway starring Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda, which is set to release on February 21, 2014. The audio of Highway has been released and is available for listening on YouTube. The music of the film has received rave reviews and Rahman has been given thumbs up by the critics. Before the film hits the screens, singer Jonita Gandhi shares her experience of working with the musical maestro:

“I have grown up listening to A.R. Rahman’s compositions and he has been a true inspiration for me throughout my career. When I was asked to sing for the film, it was nothing less than a thrilling moment for me. I must mention that working with Sonu Nigam has constantly encouraged me and inspired me to move to India and dive into the music industry head first. I feel my efforts have paid off with Highway and I would not want to look back from hereon. It’s been a childhood dream to be a singer but that Bollywood would happen so soon, was not something that I had expected. I sincerely hope the music of the upcoming film will be appreciated by the critics and people from within the industry.”

With music by legendary composer A.R. Rahman, the Highway soundtrack highlights the fresh, international voice of the young, ambitious and versatile Jonita Gandhi, with two tracks to her credit. Kahaan Hoon Main marks her outstanding ability to bridge Western and Indian music with soulful expression and Implosive Silence is an enigmatic piece ornamented by humming. The track is described by Rahman himself as “soothing to the ears”. Jonita was privileged to have her vocal talent recognized by musical maestro and two-time Grammy winner A.R. Rahman, whose notice of her skill was made public with his tweet commending her cover of Silent Night with musician Aakash Gandhi. Jonita received her call to Chennai shortly after the release of Clinton Cerejo’s Coke Studio episode, in which she lent her vocals to the unique duet Pinjra.

Jonita showcases her versatility as a playback singer from her first Bollywood song to her second; from the upbeat masti-filled dance vibe of Chennai Express to the vulnerability and innocence portrayed in Kahaan Hoon Main, Jonita stays true to the characters she represents.

Kahan Hoon Main, with lyrics penned beautifully by Irshad Kamil, presents a young girl (played by Alia Bhatt) forced into reflection of her journey of self-realization and discovery. Jonita’s soulful delivery flavours the song with qualities of a Western ballad as well as gentle Indian nuances. The emotion portrayed in the rendition of the song plays beautifully into the character’s feelings of inner conflict. On February 21 see Jonita’s voice make the visuals come alive in Highway.
